Monaco – Lille: preview

We discuss the expectations for the match between Monaco and Lille in the eighth round of the 2026/27 Ligue 1 season.

In Ligue 1, after seven rounds, a pentarchy has formed: the five league leaders each have 14 points after seven rounds. Among them are Monaco and Lille, eager to break this perfectionist paradise.

Key moments

Monaco

1. Monaco recovered from the loss to Lorient

Unfortunately for the Monégasque, in the seventh round their unbeaten streak in the league was broken. The home defeat to Lorient (0:1) surprised many, although the “haddock” enjoy provoking problems for France’s top clubs. They bounced back in the home match against German Freiburg (3:0), where the hosts let the opponent have a bit of fun on the attack, but did not concede a single ball. Thus, from first place in Ligue 1 and first place in the regular phase of the Conference League, Monaco only separates by additional indicators. Great!

2. Dier and Muzambo will not play, the left‑wing attack options lack the necessary quality level

Monaco’s losses are only two. The useful central defender Eric Dier and the fast, promising left‑winger Stanis Idumbo Muzambo are unavailable. They are only two players missing, but both would be a great help to current Monaco, as Philippe Luis’s team consistently loses in every game and Dier provides considerable assistance, while the left‑wing attack remains one of the squad’s weak points. Kumai Minamino and Mathis Détourbe play little and not with enough precision, Ansu Fati alternates good and mediocre performances, and Eday Diop shows confidence in the midfield centre. It is still expected that this match will be one of the most convincing for Fati.

3. Monaco continues a great home run

Philippe Luis managed not only to adopt but also to perfect Monaco’s strengths at Luis II’s walls. At the end of last season, under Sebastián Pokonali, the Monégasque kept a consistent performance against the league’s best clubs such as PSG (2:3) and Marseille (2:1), and in this football year they added victories to the goals. In the six home matches of the new season, in all competitions, Monaco has five wins and one draw, and at least two goals in each encounter.

Lille

1. Lille fails to cope with Champions League pressure

From the outset, it is easy to assume that in Ligue 1 Lille has a very good performance. The level of opponents at the start of the season was slightly easier than Monaco’s, but it was compensated with a hard‑fought draw against PSG (2:2). On the other hand, the Champions League schedule was unforgiving, where in the first three rounds Lille faced Betis, Arsenal and Galatasaray, ending with zero points accumulated. The match against the Turks, by the way, turned out quite good: David Ancelotti’s team attacked a lot and interestingly, but Galatasaray managed to score four of the four opportunities at Berke Özer’s goal.

2. Santos, Iguan, Ueda and Sahraoui will not play, Deyún showed great football with the Turks

Lille has more complicated players. Tiago Santos injured his cruciate until the end of the season, Hamza Iguan will recover from a cruciate injury around the end of the month, Ayase Ueda recovers from a heel injury, and Osame Sahraoui must return soon. The match against Galatasaray was a real advantage for Soriba Deyún. The Lille academy Frenchman gets more playing time, and with the Turks he started in the starting lineup for the first time in February and scored two goals. In the context of the moderate play of other forwards, his enthusiasm can be a good support for new victories.

3. Lille rarely loses to Monaco

In the last five years, the teams have faced each other 10 times, of which only two games ended with a Lille defeat. Five wins and three draws is a very decent result in matches against a comparable opponent, and in the last two years a stronger trend has been observed: no defeat in four personal encounters, three wins and only one goal conceded.

Prediction

Monaco vs Lille 25.10.2026 17:00

For Monaco, they are divided into two parallel tournaments. The loss to Lorient (0:1) in the last Ligue 1 round surprised some, but in reality it was not a big sensation, and the Monégasque bounced back with a dominant win over strong Freiburg (3:0) in the Conference League and remain among the leaders in both Ligue 1 and the LC. Lille had less luck. With squad problems, the visiting team was forced into a tough Champions League schedule, where in the intermediate results the Monégasque still have no points in the biggest European tournament. In France, the situation is much better and, despite a draw with Brest (1:1) in the seventh round, Lille is behind Monaco and others only by additional indicators. The teams face each other and Lille’s loss in the LC should not be too concerning. In the national league, the visiting team has a ranking with the defense, which, however, is not always backed by the attack line. Monaco at home shows excellent results and scores a lot, but does not win against Lille frequently. Prediction: 1-1
