Lille – Lens: Match Preview and Forecast in the Ninth Round of Ligue 1 2026/27

The northern derby has once again proven decisive in recent years: last season both squads reached the Champions League. Now Lille maintains its level, while Lens is regaining positions after a fall.

Key Points

Lille

1. Lille remains at the top of the table, but has not won its last four matches. The "Doggies" occupy third place in Ligue 1, overtaking Monaco on additional metrics. David Ancelotti keeps the level that Bruno Génésio gave his team. However, recently the son of the legendary Italian coach has questioned his squad. Lille has not won four matches in all competitions: in the Champions League it has no points after three rounds, losing without chances to Arsenal at the Emirates (0:3) and to Galatasaray at home (2:4). In the last two league matches, the "Doggies" also failed to win, and the home draw with Brest (1:1) was a clear loss of points. In the last round, Lille won favorably with a draw against Luis II (1:1).

2. There are squad problems in attack, Quassi suspended. Lille faces serious squad problems in the front line. Ayase Ueda was recovering from an injury, and his participation in the match against Lens is unlikely. In the game against Monaco, the role of the false nine was taken by the "Doggies" manager, Håkon Haraldsson, but he did not finish the match due to injury. The veteran Olivier Giroud could be introduced. Among the defenders, Tang Niangzu Quassi, who received a red card in the last match, will not help. Nathan Ngoy will return to central defense, and on the right will play Maxim Goffi or Lune Srđanovic.

3. Lille has conceded fewer goals in the league. The "Doggies" share the title of best defense in the league with Lorient. Both teams have conceded six goals in eight matches. Lille restructured after the departure of Bruno Génésio and Aïssa Boudadi; instead of controlling the ball, the team usually gives up possession. Some victories were achieved thanks to the form of goalkeeper Berke Özer and defensive solidity. It is not strong internationally, but in Ligue 1 it is solid. The attack, on the other hand, does not impress; this season no Lille player has scored more than two goals in the competition.

Lens

1. Lens is consolidating in the league. The unexpected departure of Dino Topmöller coincided with the drop of the "red and gold" in the lower part of the table. Yannick Cajuzac, without coaching experience, seemed a temporary figure. However, the Corsican stabilized the situation, maintaining the 3-4-2-1 formation of the previous and achieving several important wins. Lens won at home against Lyon (2:1) and in the last round beat Paris with the same score. In the Champions League the situation is much worse: under Cajuzac, the team suffered two defeats. Brugge and Sporting seemed reasonable rivals for Lens, but the team failed to score a goal.

2. The team still has squad problems in defense, Eduar under suspicion. Lens has suffered injuries in defense throughout the season. Cajuzac has to cover the gaps, and often one of the best left‑backs in the league, Matthieu Yudol, has played as central defender. Ismaël Ganiú is still recovering, veteran Jonathan Gradi lost a lot of time in the last two years, and rookie Mike Nawrotski broke almost immediately upon arrival. There are also doubts in attack: Abdallah Sima and Odsonn Eduar missed the last matches and are unlikely to appear in the starting lineup.

3. Lens plays mediocrously away. This season, in official matches, the "red and gold" have achieved only two away victories. In the Champions League, under Topmöller, they beat Slavia (3:2) in a tough match, and recently the team beat one of its main outsiders in Ligue 1, Tréva (3:1). The team lost at home to Strasbourg in reconstruction (1:2), and to Monaco, still unstable, (1:2); they only drew with the league debutant Le Mans (2:2), and gave up to Brugge in the Champions League (0:3). Lille is almost the strongest opponent Lens faces as a visitor in the first round.

Prediction

Lille vs Lens 31.10.2026 00:05

Lille, with a good start, remains in the top 3, but has not won the last four matches in all competitions. The game against Monaco, however, can be recorded as a win for the team: they left without forwards and finished the match with a 1:1 advantage. Due to injuries to Ayase Ueda and Håkon Haraldsson, the only likely candidate in the front line is veteran Olivier Giroud. This season, Lille has disappointed in defense in the Champions League, but has conceded fewer goals than anyone else. Yannick Cajuzac has stabilized Lens's position in the league: at home, the team beat Lyon and Paris. The team still has squad problems in defense: Ismaël Ganiú cannot come out of injury. The front‑line situation is not good due to injuries to Abdallah Sima and Odsonn Eduar. Lens plays poorly away with equal rivals this season, and Lille can continue the winning streak in direct encounters.

Prediction: 2-1
