Everton – Newcastle: preview
We have the predictions for the Everton vs Newcastle match in the fourth round of the 2026/27 League Cup. The League Cup schedule and draw have set Newcastle to face Hill Dickinson Stadium twice in a row. First, the visitors will try to stop Everton from reaching the next round of the League Cup.
Key points
Everton
1. Everton did not withstand the test of the big clubs
The Iris fans had moderate optimism for the matches against Chelsea and Arsenal, as in the first eight games of the season Everton did not suffer a defeat: two wins and four draws in the Premier League, plus passing two rounds of the League Cup. However, in both matches that ended with the same 0:2 scoreline, the capital teams had a notable advantage in play over Everton, which could convert it into goals. In the League Cup Newcastle will be the Premier League opponent on Everton’s path to a possible title. Previously, the Iris eliminated two Championship teams – Preston (4:0) and Wolverhampton (1:0).
2. At least two absences in Everton’s squad
Defender Jarrad Brantwayt missed the match against Arsenal due to a suspected concussion. Also forward Jack Grisham, who felt unwell, did not play against the English champions, but unlike Brantwayt, Grisham has many more chances to get on the field. Left back Vitali Mikolenko apparently will not play against Newcastle due to another injury. Taking into account all absences and the team’s rotation, the starting lineup may see defenders Enslie Meitland‑Niles and Michael Kinn, midfielder Hayden Hackney, and winger Tyler Dibbling omitted.
3. Everton rarely wins at home against Newcastle
Everton will host Newcastle twice at their own ground, which should raise concerns, as in the history of recent encounters between the clubs there has been a paradoxical trend: in the last six face‑to‑face matches, including pre‑season friendlies, neither home team managed a win. Everton defeated Newcastle only twice in the last eight games at their own stadium, losing three times in that period. The fiasco also ended with Everton’s first meeting with Newcastle at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium in November 2025 – 1:4.
Newcastle United
1. Newcastle has been unstable recently
In the first two rounds of the League Cup Newcastle also faced Championship teams – they were eliminated from the competition by West Bromwich (3:2) and Millwall (1:0). In both cases Newcastle scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute. Regarding Premier League matches, after a relatively good start, Newcastle managed only two wins in the last five games, losing three times in that period. Additionally, at the start of the season Newcastle had a relatively favorable schedule – only Liverpool in the first round, with which they drew (2:2) and earned more points than the teams of Matías Yassel.
2. Newcastle’s manager actively rotates the squad even in Premier League matches
In the winning match against Crystal Palace, Matías Yassel took radical measures and significantly changed the lineup, making five changes at the base after the defeat to Aston Villa. A key event was the reliable performance of the central defenders Fabian Sheer and Dan Bern, who due to various injuries had not played in that duo since last year. However, in the cup match Newcastle’s manager will again apply rotation. In particular, optimal combinations are still being sought in the attack line. On the flanks Anthony Elanga can play, who is recovering from an injury and already appeared in the previous match, and Matías Fernández‑Pardo, who missed the game against Crystal Palace due to illness.
3. Newcastle has a special relationship with the League Cup
In March 2025, the 40‑year‑old fans celebrated the club’s first trophy in 70 years with a grand display, which even some of the winners of the most prestigious English competitions had not dreamed of. Newcastle has had a standout performance in the League Cup in recent years, reaching the quarter‑finals only once in the last six years. In the last 25 matches of this competition, played since August 2021, Newcastle lost only three games in regular time. In each of these three defeats, the opponents were Manchester teams.

Forecast
Everton vs Newcastle United 29.10.2026 23:45
Both teams have passed two rounds of the League Cup, eliminating exclusively Championship rivals. However, the results of recent encounters with Premier League teams are not impressive for either competitor – Everton conceded two goals in the last three league matches, earning only one point out of nine possible, and Newcastle won only two of the last five meetings, losing the last three. In favour of Everton is the schedule – David Moise’s team proved its level against two nominal giants, Chelsea and Arsenal. However, Newcastle has an excellent record in League Cup games in recent years, plus only two defeats in the last eight visits to Everton’s stadium. Let’s assume the visitors will take the match more seriously and advance to the next round.
Forecast: 1-2
