Ajax – Atalanta: preview

We have the lineups for the match between Ajax and Atalanta in the second round of the common phase of the 2026/27 Conference League. "Atalanta", exhausted by defender injuries, will play as visitors against "Ajax", whose main focus is to play attack. Who will come out victorious?

Key points

Ajax

1. "Ajax" reacted quickly after the defeat to "Heida".

The start in the Conference League with a home match against "Heida" (1:2) added another loss to the head coach Michel's tally. The team was not as sharp and suffered the deserved defeat. But, in the end, the Ajax players reorganised and in the Eredivisie match beat "Groningen" – 5:2. It was a two‑sided game, but for Ajax there were two wild bursts: two goals between minutes 27 and 37 in the first half and three goals in 15 minutes in the second half. It is believed that this was the true form of the team, but it is important that it does not disappear in the encounter against "Atalanta".

2. Cygankov and Kerer will return to the starting XI.

During the break, Ajax head coach Michel lost several key players to injury: forward Kasper Dolberg, centre‑back Deyli Blind, full‑back Cayo Henrique and winger Steven Bergwijn. In that situation, responsibility falls on other players: Julian Brant, Davy Klassen, Mark‑André Ter Stegen and Sofyan Amrabat. The Moroccan played without substitutions. Viktor Cygankov, Tolu Arkoader and Tilo Kerer, after "Heida", rested but will return in the match against Atalanta.

3. "Ajax" even at the "Johan Cruijff Arena" cannot withstand competition in European competitions.

Recent wins over "Sion" (5:3), "Sheffield" (3:1) and "Vojvodina" (4:1) against their supporters are good. But the important thing is how they look against higher‑level rivals: the results are terrible: matches with "Olympiacos" (1:2), "Benfica" (0:2), "Galatasaray" (0:3), "Eintracht" (1:2), "Inter" (0:2), "Union" (1:2) led to a series of defeats and the conclusion that the team is no longer as competitive on the European stage. Michel's mission in the encounter with "Atalanta" is to prove that his team can achieve more.

Atalanta

1. "Atalanta" under Mauricio Sarri still has difficulties.

Victories over "Venice" and "Pafos" (both 3:1) could have been a boost for Atalanta, but Mauricio Sarri's team returns to reality with the unstable "Milan". The "Red‑blacks" easily overcame the Bergamo resistance during an hour. The visiting players only stirred when they lost 0:3. The season's difficulty for the "black‑blues" is literally reflected in the Serie A table: 11th place and complete ignorance of draws: nine of ten matches, including qualification to the Conference League, ended with wins or losses.

2. Sarri has major problems in defence.

Atalanta's head coach must change the lines of play from one match to another, but above all he focuses on defence. To Isaku Hin, Jorgei Skalvini and Odilon Cosun, after the game with "Milan", Sead Kolašinac was added. As a result, Sarri actively incorporates youth into the training process, and Rely Obrich even debuted in the new season, substituting Kolašinac in the first half. Frank Kesie's injury also adds discomfort in midfield: defensive qualities are only in Ederson, unlike Gianluigi Gaetano and Mario Pashalic. Additionally, there are adaptation problems to Giacomo Rapador's 4‑2‑3‑1/4‑3‑3 and Charles de Ketele. That further reduces the Bergamo's potential.

3. "Atalanta" increased its effectiveness.

Although things are bad for "Atalanta", their seven goals in the last three matches cannot be ignored. In the match against the reckless "Ajax" it is unlikely that the team will have to stay in its own half thinking about goal safety. A two‑sided game is expected in which Mauricio Sarri's team must be at a high level against the rival that left with the dog in the relaxed Dutch league football.

A lot will depend on the support of Nikola Zelevski and Jonathan Row, as well as the forward Gianluigi Scamacca, who still loses the competition to Nikola Krstovic.
