Sporting Lisbon – LASC: Preview

We have the predictions for the match between Sporting Lisbon and LASC in the context of the third round of the 2026/27 Champions League group stage. "Sporting" cannot overtake "Porto" or "Benfica" in the domestic league, but it started the Champions very well. LASC still has not achieved either of those.

Key points

Sporting Lisbon

1. "Sporting" remains unbeaten in the new season

The "Green and Whites" somehow repeat the path of "Benfica" under José Mourinho's pattern last year. Since the start of the new football year, the "Lions" have not lost a single match in the Primeira Liga, although they remain one point behind "Benfica" and six behind "Porto". In the last Portuguese league round, "Sporting" beat "Braga" (3:1) in a very strange match with many rebounds; despite the score difference, Rui Borreja's team did not have a real advantage. The trip to Lans followed a similar pattern: the Portuguese hit less and passed less, but won again by a two-goal margin (2:0).

2. Debast and Salazar unavailable, Borreja tests new tactics

The situation with Zeno Debast became more confusing: the Belgian had an international break with the national team and did not appear on the field during that period, missed the match against "Braga" due to suspension and also suffered a muscle injury that will keep him out for at least a few weeks. Rodrigo Salazar faced a similar fate, not ready to play against LASC. Losing a Uruguayan is never convenient, but Rui Borreja found a solution before the problem arose and started using a 4-3-3 formation instead of the usual 4-2-3-1. The home midfielders are abundant, so the idea makes sense.

3. Sporting's attack overcomes any difficulty

The match against "Famalicão" in mid-September (1:1) remains the only game this season where Sporting's players failed to score at least two goals. In the Portuguese league, the "Lions" have scored 20 goals after eight rounds; both Champions League opponents have been disappointed at least twice, and at home "Green and White" scored less than two goals only in the disastrous loss to "Torreense" (1:2) in the Portuguese Cup final.

LASC

1. LASC fails against strong rivals

The current Austrian champion also finds itself in a chasing position in the domestic league. After nine rounds, the "Blacks and Whites" have 19 points and are five points behind the leader "Rapid". Most problems arose in the last month: defeats against "Rapid" (0:2) and "Sturm" (1:2) in Austria, with which they must compete for the title, and the match against "Liverpool" ended with a very open defeat for LASC, losing six goals (3:6). On weekends they managed to win easily against "Austria Lustenau" (4:0) and slightly change the negative frame.

2. Bello and Ussur unavailable, Lang and Danek rested during the Austria game

The visitors, oddly enough, also have two absences in the squad. Key left-back George Bello and striker Moses Ussur, who reduced his pace, are unavailable. His word will be clear, though simple, but the match against "Austria", where Dittmar Kübauer had to use most of the leaders due to the difficult league position, was important. Among the freshest players are the team's top scorer, Christopher Lang, and the great midfielder Christopher Danek, but still they will not achieve the necessary freshness.

3. LASC has completely forgotten the defensive game

The problems in their half of the field are the main difficulties for LASC. The match against "Austria" was the first and only in the last month in which Kübauer's team did not concede. Partly, it can be attributed to a difficult schedule, but in away games there are very few matches of this type: only two of the last eight.

Prediction

Sporting Lisbon vs LASC 21.10.2026 23:00

"Sporting" continues to chase the Primeira Liga leaders and achieves victories in the Champions League group stage. In Portugal, the "Lions", despite not losing, are six points behind the leader "Porto", and in the Champions League they have successfully faced "Galatasaray" (3:1) and "Lans" (2:0), which allowed them to temporarily occupy a spot among the best. LASC fails both there and there. In the Champions League, the Austrians lost to AEK Greece (0:1) and were overwhelmed by "Liverpool" (3:6), and in the Bundesliga, due to mistakes against "Sturm" (1:2) and "Rapid" (0:2) they are behind the first place.

It is difficult to find reasons why "Sporting" cannot win this match. Rui Borreja's team, unlike LASC, had a full week of rest, and the absence of Rodrigo Salazar may have balanced the tactics. The visitors have good attacking players, but their "Blacks and Whites" goalkeepers have been especially vulnerable recently, and with the great offensive potential of the great Portuguese it is almost impossible to compete. Although with a couple of goals, as with "Liverpool", it is entirely feasible to recover.

Prediction: 4-2
