Brugge – Lens: preview
We have the predictions for the match between Brugge and Lens in the third round of the group stage of the 2026/27 Champions League. Both squads have earned three points after the first two rounds, and Brugge has taken the lead over Inter in the away match.
Key points
Brugge
1. Brugge has achieved a series of five consecutive wins in all competitions
The Belgian champions this season confirm their level. The team is not leading the league only because Gent’s start was even more convincing, beating the dark blues in a personal encounter in August (2:1). This defeat remains Brugge’s only loss of points at home. After a respectable defeat against Aston Villa (2:3) in the first round of the group stage, the team has continued to win steadily, comfortably surpassing the strong Gend (3:0) and Antwerp (3:1) in the league. Brugge’s peak form was the away win over Inter in the Champions – 4:3. Over the weekend, Ivan Lekovic kept most of the players in the cup match against Lokeren (1:0).
2. The core rested in the cup
In the match against Lokeren, half of Brugge’s starting XI rested. On the bench were Yann Zommer, defenders Brandon Mechel and Kirian Sabe, the main striker and Inter’s storm, Nicola Tesolodi, and midfielders Hugo Vettelsen and Karlus Borge. In this situation, the Belgians have a great advantage over their rivals, who played the league match against much more serious opponents. Brugge’s squad is ready, and only player health issues could cause changes.
3. Brugge has a powerful attack
Since September 13, the dark blues have played four matches in which they scored at least three goals. Besides Raal La Louvière, the Belgian league opponents were strong, not to mention Inter at San Siro. Moreover, in the match against the Milanese, Brugge proved the idea of breaking a defense that plays with three central defenders; due to their level of resilience, they rarely find themselves in their own country, and Lens has played this way since the days of Franck Ez.
The attack leader, Nicola Tesolodi, only arrived as a substitute in the cup. Brugge, fresh in current form, seems the favorite against the French.
Lens
1. Yannick Káuzak is starting to deliver results
One of the toughest players in the 2010s Ligue 1 unexpectedly became Lens’ coach after Dino Topmeller’s resignation. It seemed a temporary solution, but the recent results of the “red and golds” confirm the specialist’s correct direction. He kept the 3-4-2-1 formation that Lens has used for a long time, waited for the return of several key players from the hospital, and lifted the team in the Ligue 1 table with wins over Lyon (2:1) and Troyes (3:1). In the Champions, the streak didn’t continue – the team lost at home to Sporting (0:2).
2. Yudol returns, squad problems in defense arise
The main news for Lens is the return of Matéo Yudol. In the match against Lyon, the left back, with Pierre Saïze who even married the national team, received a red card and lost the game against Troyes. In the last round, three defensive players of the “red and golds” were injured. Jean-Clair Todibo, Ruben Agilar and Ismaelo Ganiu did not play. On the right flank, Saud Abdulhamid seems a good replacement, and Samson Baydu can play as one of the central defenders, but the left central position is problematic, and Yudol can return to that position he played before Káuzak’s appointment.
3. Lens is not as functionally fresh
The “red and golds”, although they secured a solid win against one of the league outsiders, could not afford the same comfort as Brugge, who deployed a second‑reserve squad in the home cup match. The French bench seems longer and of higher quality, but frequent injuries, especially in the defensive line, ruin everything. You can’t envy Yannick Káuzak: when he arrived, the hospital was empty, and now he will have to patch the holes again.

Prediction
Brugge vs Lens
21.10.2026 23:00
Brugge maintains its level this season – it has won five consecutive matches in all competitions. In each of these encounters, except the game against Lokeren in the Cup, the dark blues scored at least three goals. Ivan Lekovic allowed himself to leave half of the core, including Yann Zommer and Nicola Tesolodi, on the bench for the last game, and now the Belgians are approaching the match very fresh. They have a consistent squad and few injuries.
The unexpected Lens leader, Yannick Káuzak, is delivering results – two consecutive wins lifted the team in the Ligue 1 table. However, in the Champions, he failed to add points in the second consecutive match, losing at home to Sporting.
Matéo Yudol returns, but three other defensive players were injured in the game against Troyes. Lens fielded a practically optimal squad for the league, and Brugge seems fresher.
We assume a safe home win for the Belgians.
Prediction: 3-1
